1997 Season Highlights

Frostburg State University names Courtney McClelland the new head coach of women’s soccer and assistant coach with the softball program. McClelland comes to Frostburg from Roland Park County School in Baltimore, where she coached the varsity squad. She is a graduate of Towson State (MD) University where she also served as the assistant coach. Courtney excelled as a player in both soccer and softball at Towson State (Div 1). In soccer, she was a second team All-Big South Conference selection in 1993 and 1994, and the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, she was a Big South All-Tournament team choice and was named to the North Atlantic Conference All-Academic team in 1995. McClelland also received her team’s Iron Woman Award for starting every game during her four years at TSU and she served as a team captain for three seasons. In softball, Courtney was first team All-Big South in 1994 and named to the All-Big South Tournament in 1993. She was named a team captain in 1995 and still holds the TSU record for triples in a season.

The women’s soccer team posted yet another winning campaign, they ended the season at 14-6. This season has been the winningest campaign in their brief four-year history and has never had a losing season. 1997 marked FSU’s first season as a member of the newly formed Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Lady Bobcats finished in second-place in the AMCC, advancing to the conference championship game where they lost a tough 2-1 decision to the host team Penn-State Behrend. FSU’s only regular season conference defeat was against Behrend in Erie, PA (2-1).

The team was a defensive machine; they held their opponents to less than a goal a game (0.77 average). The team also posted an amazing 10 shutouts in their 14 victories.  The offense was very potent throughout the season as well, they averaged over three and a half goals per contest.
