Jamie Olson (Campbell ’03, 1st season)
2003
Season Highlights
Frostburg State names Denise Rogers
and Jamie Olson to the coaching staff as graduate assistants. Rogers, a 1999 graduate of Urbana High School (MD), played four
years of high school varsity soccer for the current FSU head coach and served as team captain for those four seasons. After
high school Rogers attended University of Mississippi, where she played two years before transferring to Elon College (NC).
Both programs are division 1 teams. Olson, a 1999 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School (PA), also played four years of
varsity soccer but as a goalkeeper. After high school she attended Campbell University (NC) playing four years as a goalkeeper.
Olson also played semi-professional soccer for the Northern Virginia Majestics for the 2002 season.
The Bobcats were chosen for the second straight year to finish first in the preseason coaches’ poll and junior
Karen Kotofski was voted to be the Preseason Player of the Year and senior goalkeeper Stephanie Zych was voted as one of the
other players to watch in the conference.
Frostburg
was favored to three-peat as AMCC Champions and that’s just what they did when they met conference foe, Penn-State Behrend,
in the finals once again and once again the Bobcats came out on top defeating the Lions of Behrend 4-2. Frostburg came into
the match as the number 1 seed, finishing the conference with an undefeated 6-0 record.
After winning their third straight AMCC Championship Frostburg received it’s third consecutive invitation to
the NCAA Tournament and it’s first time hosting a first round match. For the first round Frostburg hosted familiar foe,
Westminster and pulled out a stellar 3-2. This win advances Frostburg to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Division III
Soccer Championship for the first time in the program’s history. Frostburg faced the #2 ranked team in the nation, University
of Scranton, for the regional semi-finals. Unfortunately the Bobcats fell 1-0 and ended a stellar season, the best yet for
the program.
FSU finished the 2003 season with a 16-5 overall record and a 6-0 undefeated conference record. Kotofski was named
AMCC Player of the Year, freshman Danielle Carter was named Newcomer of the Year, and Coach Parker was named Coach of the
Year. Kotofski was also named to the 2003 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Great Lakes
Regional First Team as well as to the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District II Second Team.
This season came with many individual record breakers. Kotofski set the single-season school records with 24 goals
and 53 points, as well as school career records 62 goals and 138 points. She was also recognized in the whole NCAA for Division
III where she ranked tied for 13th in the nation for goals per game with 1.22 and tied for 22nd in the
nation for points per game with 2.72 through November 9th, 2003. Goalkeeper Stephanie Zych finished out her spectacular
soccer career as FSU’s all-time leader with 48 wins, 443 saves, and 19 shutouts. She also owns the top 2 spots for wins
in a season, posting 17 wins in 2001 and 16 in 2003. Zych is the only player not returning for the 2004 season.
Off the field, the Bobcats were rewarded for their success in the classroom. For the first time in the program’s
history Frostburg won a NSCAA Team Academic Award for carrying a 3.10 team GPA.
