2002 Season
Highlights
Frostburg
State Alum, Brian Parker, returns to the ‘Burg to become head coach of the women’s soccer program. Parker was
a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987 to 1990 and he coached the women’s team as a club sport from 1990-1993. Coach
Lysik ventures to Rhode Island to become an assistant for Division 1 Brown University. The Bobcats return 17 players from
the record-setting 2001 squad, which posted a 17-5-1 record.
Frostburg was picked
to be in first place in the preseason conference coaches’ poll for the first time with Behrend being the runner-up.
Although they were voted first in the conference this would be their toughest schedule outside the conference in the program’s
history having to play against seven regionally ranked opponents, six being on the road. FSU finished the season with a 10-8-4
overall record and 4-2 in the conference, accomplishing much more than expected in those 10 wins. A highlight game of the regular season came when FSU shocked regionally ranked Carnegie Mellon 1-0.
The Lady ‘Cats
successfully defended their AMCC title as the third seed coming into the tournament and their season’s performance also
earned them a second straight bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament where they would face Westminster in the first round.
Frostburg was defeated by the overpowering Titans 4-1.
Karen Kotofski became
the second FSU women’s soccer player in the program’s history to earn regional All-American honors when she was
selected to third team of the 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Adidas Great Lakes Region All-America Soccer
Team. Kotofski also earned second-team Verizon/CoSIDA All-Academic District II accolades with a 3.615 GPA.
